HOSPICE DU RHÔNE 2000 INTRODUCTION

RHONE - N - BOWL: "From the minute we walked through the door, everybody knew we were there to fool around."   On Thursday Eve, the night before the festivities of HdR begin, there is held a Great Tournament in the art of ten pin bowling and the Gang of Pour was there...

THE SEMINARS:  Perhaps the most exciting aspect of HdR 2000 for the true Rhône junkie was the series of seminars that were conducted on Friday and Saturday mornings.  As much structured tastings as seminars, these gave participants the opportunity to not only sample wares of featured winemakers, but also hear their remarks and ask questions regarding specifics in the processes and techniques they favored.  Our Team Coverage includes notes and commentary from the Gang’s roving reporter, Bruce L., an astute observer of today’s wine scene and califusa, Left Coast Correspondent.

LIBRARY/HOSPICE BARREL TASTING PREVIEW: The Library/Hospice Barrel Tasting Preview was held on Friday afternoon, after the day’s seminars and lunch.  Several participating wineries poured wines and vintages previous to 1996, but even more importantly, prospective bidders were able to sample wines to be featured in the Hospice Barrel Auction the following day.

THE AUCTION: The Hospice du Rhône Barrel Auction was held at about noon on Saturday with an al fresco luncheon that focused on the wines and foods of Santa Barbara County.  Proceeds from the auction benefit the Hospice of San Luis Obispo County, a non-profit organization that is “committed to the dignity of the human experience, provides volunteer support, education, and counseling to those living with a life threatening or terminal illness, their families, and to those seeking support through the grief process.”

THE GRAND TASTING: The Grand Tasting was held shortly after the Barrel Auction, and it was indeed a wonderful affair, with all the participating wineries pouring the wines of their choice.

THE FAREWELL BARBEQUE: The final event of Hospice du Rhône is the Farewell Barbecue and Brew, held shortly after the Grand Tasting in the Fairgrounds Park.  Here, attendees gather to say good-byes, enjoy a barbecue,  slosh down draft beer  and observe the presentation of the Rhône-N-Bowl and Old Bridge Cellars Shiraz/Syrah Trophies and the coveted Coat-du- Rhône.

OFF-LINES OUT LEFT: As befitting all Gang of Pour travels, there's always an off-line somewhere and while we missed Brad Harrington's off-line Friday night we did party down at Cambria House where the Gang gained a new Honorary member and placed one long-standing member on probation.  Henry and Lauren Harris also hosted a fabulous Sunday off-line for those of us heading home.
