And so finally, after a wonderful two weeks of fun, but never frivolity, the time had come to return to what passes for normalcy around Gang Central. And that meant it was also time to bid Bree adieu and put him on a plane back to the Left Coast. But we weren’t quite done yet. Allan had one more wine he felt compelled to open for us, and one more lovely dish to create.

1985 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cask 23 Napa Valley Red Table Wine, 13.8% alc.: This rusty dark garnet is about as good as California Cabernet gets; "the only way it can go is down, it won’t get any better," according to Bree, and who were we to say otherwise?! Mature and luscious, with flavors and aromas of cassis/plum/cedar/ sea air, it is smooth, velvety and perfectly harmonious, with classic structure, and a lovely balance of big fruit, silky tannins, firm acidity and secondary nuances. It was absolutely sublime, and a wonderful match for his pan seared filet mignon on a bed of mixed greens with vinaigrette, and green beans and slices of heirloom tomatoes on the side.

After that, there was nothing left to do but chauffeur califusa out to Detroit Metro and watch him fly off into the sunset, feeling all warm and fuzzy and slightly out of touch with reality. It was a beautiful thing.
