Notes from the Mosh Pit

by califusa, Left Coast Correspondent to the Gang of Pour

El Nino washed down the streets of this beautiful city early this morning, then took a nap, blessing us with blue skies and balmy breezes, and gladdening the hearts of thousands of Zinfandel lovers. The Festival Pavilion at Fort Mason was, once again, the site of the "World's Biggest Zinfandel Tasting", sponsored by Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP).

morning before the volunteer corps arrived.

The emergence and growth of this organization is nothing short of astounding. Conceived by Dr. Jerry Sepps of Storybook Mountain Winery, ZAP has grown from a handful of producers and a couple of hundred 'advocate' members in 1991 to more than 160 grower and producer members, and close to 4000 advocates. This tasting has now become one of the California Wine Country's premier events.

2.jpgGuided by the spirit and energy of Margaret Smith (left), the original Executive Director (Emeritus), and now with Rebecca Robinson at the helm, this group of winos has amazed not only themselves, but the entire California wine community with its incredible growth and popularity.

I could spend hours talking about this group of folks, and the wonderful events and experiences we've shared - but - another time.

Let's talk WINE !!!

Camera and microrecorder in one hand, wine glass in the other hand, I waded into the fray.
