The Gang of Pour

PHASE THREE: More Wine, and a Little Song

1990 Lafoy et Gasse Côte-Rôtie
1983 Remoissenet Vosne-Romanée

After dinner, with dishes cleared, the Artist's contribution was introduced, a 1990 Lafoy et Gasse Côte-Rôtie. Already drinking quite well, it had a slightly inky purple red hue. The nose drew such descriptions as green olives, moss, green moldy rocks, and plums. The flavors were rather different than the aromas, with plums, but also, pine cone, mint, bramble fruit, and saddle leather. Gelbfüssler was reminded of wheat, somehow. It drew thumbs up, all around.

guitar jpegIt was about this time that Gelbfüssler prevailed upon this singer to pull out the Gibson, and Hohners, and perform a couple of old blues tunes, and a rather off-color polka. While this was taking place, C.Z. decanted yet another red, and poured this sing... er, taster, a glass. ( I kept changing hats; even now, I get confused.) He asked for impressions, and, after some considerable sniffing and a taste or two, I offered the opinion that it was a southern Rhone from '85 to '89. It was actually a 1983 Remoissenet Vosne-Romanée. Because I was preoccupied with song, I'll defer to the Zinfan's notes here:

vosne-romanŽe bottle jpeg"I should have opened the Burgundy sooner, because it opened up in the glass quite well. Although it could still be cellared, maybe two more years, it was not, by any means, a massive wine. Quite plummy, and even peppery for a pinot, good deep colour for a village wine, even a little spicey on the medium length finish. Not much in earth on the nose, or typical pinot fruit, it may have been over powered by the preceding wines. Nicely balanced, though."

It was also my opinion that this would have shown better on its own terms; nevertheless, it seemed amazingly fresh for a fourteen year-old village Burgundy. It was the Artist's favorite red of the evening.
