Consorzio Cal-Italia Tasting

Conclusions

All in all, this was great fun. From my perspective, I would say the tasting was a great success. There was plenty of room to move around, and the winery tables did not get terribly crowded. There were several caterers and specialty foods purveyors, so we had a chance to taste foods that complimented the wines. My good friend Margaret Smith was also here to promote her series of wine friendly cookbooks, including her newest that is designed to match recipes with Italian varietals. If you have an interest in pairing home cooking with wine, I encourage you to check out her offerings.

I got to see some old friends, and had the chance to make some new ones.

With a few notable exceptions, these producers still have a long way to go to match the quality-price ratio of Italian producers. Nevertheless, there were some very exciting wines here today, and a few very good values (especially the wines from Cosentino).

I give Consorzio Cal-Italia high marks for creating a very enjoyable tasting that far exceeded my expectations.

Wines of the Day

1997 Gabrielli Winery Sangiovese Reserve from barrel – I was totally mesmerized by the aromatics of this wine – complex and fascinating – hope I can get a few bottles of this.

1995 Pepi - Colline di Sassi Napa Valley Sangiovese – a close second, and an absolutely delicious wine.
